  3. Sending Traffic to the MARS Networks
  4.  
  5. The message format for traffic sent into the MARS networks is the same
  6. as that for any NTS traffic, with the following exceptions:
  7.  
  8. o    MARS traffic must include an entry in the time filed field in UTC
  9.      (zulu) time.  The date must be in UTC time, as well.  When a
  10.      message enters the MARS system, it loses its Amateur message
  11.      number.  The only way a MARS station can service a message back,
  12.      if necessary, is by its time filed and date in UTC time.  MARS
  13.      traffic handlers call this the Date Time Group.

  15. o    Do not assume that the post locator or the receiving station can
  16.      easily find the addressee.  Include as complete an address
  17.      (including a telephone number), as possible.  Also be sure to
  18.      include the addressee's service number in 3x2x4 format.  For
  19.      example, 555-55-5555.

  21. As with any radiogram, try to keep the word count down.
  22.  
  23. APO Traffic
  24.  
  25. When sending APO traffic, a geographic location is not needed.  There
  26. are several APO areas:
  27. o    APO New York covers all of Europe.
  28. o    APO Miami covers the Panama Canal Zone, parts of South America, and
  29.      Puerto Rico.
  30. o    APO San Francisco covers Hawaii, Japan, Korea, The Philipines,
  31.      Australia, and some of the Pacific Islands.
  32. o    APO Seattle covers Alaska and parts of Japan.

  34. FPO Traffic
  35.  
  36. Messages addressed to anyone aboard a U.S. Naval or Coast Guard vessel
  37. cannot be sent through the NTS or any MARS network.  The sender should
  38. use a Class "E" message through Western Union.  Western Union requires
  39. the following Information:
  40.  
  41. o    Rank/Rate of Individual
  42. o    Full Name (No nicknames) and Branch of Service
  43. o    Social Security Number
  44. o    Name of Ship, Department, Division, Etc.
  45. o    FPO and Zip Code of Ship
  46.  
  47. There is a charge for this service.  Western Union will relay this
  48. message to the nearest Naval Communications Station.
  49.  
  50. All FPO Traffic must have a geographic location.  For example FPO San
  51. Francisco 96602 is Marine Mobile Forces Pacific and that covers a very
  52. large area.  Look at the following message for an example:

  64. Emergency Traffic
  65.  
  66. Emergency traffic, such as a death in the immediate family, serious
  67. illness, etc., can be sent through the American Red Cross.  There is no
  68. charge for this service.  If you are contacted to file MARS emergency
  69. traffic, it is suggested that you refer the sender to the American Red
  70. Cross.

  74. Here is an example of what an NTS message looks like for an APO address:
